Wadi El Natrun monasteries

أديرة وادي النطرون

Desert monasteries at the heart of Coptic monastic life, a station on the Holy Family route.

Wadi El Natrun, a desert depression between Cairo and Alexandria, has been a centre of Christian monasticism since the fourth century. Four ancient monasteries are still active today: St Macarius, St Bishoy, the Syrians (al-Suryan) and al-Baramus. Coptic tradition counts the valley among the stations of the Holy Family's journey in Egypt.
